Course Description: To work on Climber or Tower Cranes in New York City (NYC), all workers must successfully complete 30 hours of training as mandated by the Building Code. To work as a licensed Climber/Tower Crane Rigger in NYC, the licensee must successfully complete 30 hours of training as mandated by the Building Code.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• OSHA Subpart CC.
• Rules of the City of New York (Chapter 6 and 9).
• NYC Building Code overview.
• Fall Protection.
• Crane assembly and disassembly.
• Pre-lift planning.
• Weights and materials.
• Lifting and lowering loads.
• Signaling and proper means of communication with operator.
• Crane and hoist inspections.
• Recurring jobsite cranes and derricks safety issues.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify the rules and regulations that were promulgated after construction accidents in New York City.
• Choose safe work practices at their construction sites based on prudent decision-making.
• Differentiate between OSHA standards and Building Code.
• Identify rigging equipment and their hazards.
• Discuss common causes of accidents with cranes and rigging.
• Identify derricks and other types of cranes.
• Read load charts and develop skills necessary to understand rigging calculations.
• Analyze the qualifications for Mast Climbers, Cranes, and apply these methods to their plan, setup and inspection.
• Identify unsafe conditions in the use of load binders.
• Inspect rigging hardware and recognize inadequate conditions.
• Explain the proper use and limitations of the various rigging equipment and hardware (wire rope, synthetic slings, shackles, eyebolts, hooks, etc.).
• Explain safe working practices to consider when performing hoisting and rigging.
• State the proper hand signals used during lifting operations.
• Recognize the responsibilities and practices of the qualified operator, inspector, and rigger.
