Is There a Difference In Safety Between Union and Non-union?
Illinois Economic Policy Institute at the University of Illinois released a report between the differences in safety on union and non-union construction work sites. The report analyzed 37,000 OSHA inspections in the construction industry in 2019, with more than 2,800 at union work sites and 34,200 at non-union work sites.
The report reveals that union jobs have significantly fewer safety and health violations. These sites were 19% less likely to have an OSHA violation and 34% fewer violations per inspection than non-union sites. Unions represent 14% of the construction industry, yet account for only 5% of OSHA violations. In addition, inspections at non-union work sites are more likely to occur due to employee complaints.
